Eye-O-Plasty

Two Japanese surgeons have described a new surgical option for Asian patients desiring more oval-appearing eyes.

eye-o-plasty eyelid operation

The authors noted that a rounded or pulled down lower eyelid may be recognized as a symptom of aging or a complication after blepharoplasty but then propose doing essentially just that in ths name of eye reshaping.

The surgery alters the anatomy of the lower eyelid by removing a sliver of skin and then tightening the underlying eyelid retractors (small internal structures that move the lid down when the eye looks down) from an cut made along the lid's back surface (conjunctiva).

The result is a shortage of nornal tissue that pulls the lid down, a result that most Asian and non-Asian cosmetic surgeons strive to avoid at all costs.

The eyes appear less slanted and more open vertically after surgery, but this came at a cost. Complications include poor eyelid closure and lashes rubbing against the eyeball.

One has to wonder about the future effects on the health of the lids, eyes, and vision as unsuspecting young patients eager to pull out all the stops on eyelid modification grow older.
